Objectives

The purpose of this application note is to give a brief background on 5G (NR) wireless communication an explain the reason a SNYPER-5G Graphyte may need a SIM card to give more rounded survey results.

5G NR (New Radio) communication

5G is the fifth-generation wireless cellular technology, developed by 3GPP with faster speeds, higher capacity, lower latency, and increased reliability compared to 4G (LTE) architecture. It is designed to support a wider range of devices and applications, from smartphones to smart cities to driverless cars, generally the Internet of Things (IoT). There are two architectures that Network Operators employ for 5G network cellular communications.

NSA (Non-Stand Alone) and SA (Stand Alone)

The NSA architecture was devised so that the operators could use the existing 4G (LTE) structure to take advantage of 5G. When a 5G call is made using NSA, the signals use 4G (LTE) to connect to the cells. The LTE cells then convert this to the 5G capable equipment to make use of the low latency and high bandwidth that 5G offers. Basically, 5G NSA is backwards compatible with 4G (LTE)

The SA architecture (a 5G only infrastructure) was deployed around 2023 for operators to use for 5G capable equipment. This makes full use of 5G capabilities.

Why is it sometimes necessary to use a SIM card when using SNYPER 5G

SNYPER 5G, like all SNYPER Cellular Signal Strength analysers, surveys all the nearby cells without a SIM card and shows which networks are stronger in a specific area to allow the user to choose the best SIM card/Network for their cellular real estate.

When running a survey, the SNYPER 5G will show all cells using 5G (SA) and LTE technologies. It is however, incapable of showing 5G NSA communication, as it cannot “see” which 4G (LTE) cell was used to pass on the 5G signal (since network operators use the LTE infrastructure for the initial connection), then communicate with 5G capable equipment.

To overcome this issue, the SNYPER 5G should be equipped with a 5G SIM card. The SIM card then decodes which 4G LTE cell was used for 5G communication.

It should be noted that when using a SIM card in SNYPER 5G the results will only show the cells from the network that the SIM card belongs to. To overcome this, it is recommended that a Roaming SIM card is used, although the results will be limited to the networks that the Roaming SIM card can connect to.

With any instrument, the value is in its ease of use and the benefits it delivers.

In the cellular network world, the demand for measurement of network signals grows and grows… and with it, the need to gain results quickly and easily. Siretta – through its SNYPER family – have provided a developing range of instruments for cellular product installation and service personnel.

We recently introduced the SNYPER-LTEM (GL) to our cellular network analyser range, a high performance, multi-language network signal analyser dedicated to surveying the LTE CatM1, NB1 & also 2G / GSM Global networks.

It incorporates a number of important features and can perform three types of survey:

LTE CatM1 (LTE CatM1 network with signal strength in the area)

LTE Cat NB1 (LTE Cat NB1 network without signal strength in the area *)

2G / GSM (2G / GSM networks with signal strength in the area)

The LTE CatM1 and LTE Cat NB1* surveys will record the base-station with the strongest signal for each operator in the local area. The 2G / GSM survey will provide multiple results from each network operator, in one single survey. Results can be downloaded to a PC and displayed in “csv” format or “HTML” graphical format. This will allow users to analyse the data and make informed decisions about their network rollout. The SNYPER-LTEM (GL) can also provide access to Siretta’s CloudSURVEY Portal (subscription based service) where surveys can be stored in your own account for reference purposes and future comparisons.

The SNYPER-LTEM (GL) comes equipped in a rugged carrycase with associated accessories, and does not require a SIM to perform its local site surveys.

British designer and manufacturer of wireless connectivity and test products, Siretta, has announced the SNYPER-LTE Graphyte cellular analyser. The latest member of the SNYPER range of advanced cellular signal strength testers, the SNYPER-LTE Graphyte enables users to log cellular signal strength over long periods of time to determine the most suitable mobile network operators (MNOs).

Many machine-to-machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) applications use cellular networks for communication, with GSMA Intelligence forecasting almost a billion cellular connected devices by 2020 . SNYPER-LTE Graphyte helps installation engineers and project managers to select the most reliable network for each location and to carry out all post-deployment analysis. Measuring cellular signal strengths over lengthy periods no longer requires anyone to be present, thanks to this sophisticated yet easy-to-use new signal analyser that can be left unattended after its initial set-up.

The SNYPER-LTE Graphyte measures signal strength for 2G, 3G and LTE networks, either individually or simultaneously. Another key feature of the SNYPER-LTE Graphyte is that it does not require a SIM to carry out cellular surveys, this being in difference to some of the existing SNYPER Family.

Stephen Sydes, managing director at Siretta, stated: “The SNYPER-LTE Graphyte – is the first of its kind to enable multiple surveys to be logged sequentially, automatically and unattended. The SNYPER-LTE Graphyte allows the user to set up cellular signal strength logging, as a background task, for up to 500 surveys and up to a week’s worth of data, freeing them up to concentrate on other priorities. This has to have efficiency and productivity benefits for both the individual user and their companies.”

Survey results are saved automatically and at the end of the surveying period an overview is instantly available. Detailed and time-stamped logs of cellular signal strengths can be downloaded as required via the device’s built-in USB port for full analysis in standard spreadsheet or graphical HTML format. Depending on the user’s requirements, the multi-survey results (which are available in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish) can then be broken down by base station, mobile network operator (MNO) and network level.

Selection of the most suitable MNO/MNO’s for a given location can be assisted through viewing information on the presence of each base-station (visibility), during the multiple surveying period, as well as via an MNO summary table showing the number of operator base-stations at defined signal level breaks.

In addition, the SNYPER-LTE Graphyte uses the SNYPER liveSCAN function for selecting individual cells/base-stations and producing a display trace on the device, and a time-stamped logging file that can be downloaded to a PC. Also, liveSCAN can be used in antenna alignment.

Essentially the world’s first combined detector, informer, decision maker, time saver and results producer, the SNYPER-LTE Graphyte simplifies survey logging though easy-to-follow menus that enable users to set their survey criteria, including number of surveys and time intervals between them, with pre-set configurations.

By improving decision making, the SNYPER-LTE Graphyte means users can act quickly, saving them time and money, and survey a greater number of sites faster than was previously possible. By ensuring the best MNO is chosen at each location, M2M systems are made more reliable, and expensive field visits to change SIMs are eliminated.

Low cost cellular surveying equipment is becoming more important. As IoT and other data applications using cellular connectivity need to determine the signal strength and also the optimum locations for antennas, etc, small portable equipment is very useful.

Meeting this need and many others, Siretta, a British designer and manufacturer of wireless connectivity and test products, has launched its SNYPER-LTE Graphyte cellular analyser.

The Siretta SNYPER-LTE Graphite analyser is able to provide a very useful insight into the cellular signal within an area for use by installation engineers, research and development, utility companies, cellular network providers and very many others.

The SNYPER LTE Graphite also has a feature known as livescan that enables the engineer to monitor the signal strength of a particular operator so that the optimum location and direction can be determined when installing an antenna for an M2M or IoT application. In circumstances where engineers have a variety of antennas to they can install, the SNYPER LTE Graphite provides the capability for them to select the most reliable and cost effective solution. By installing antennas that are not over-specified for a given installation, significant costs can be saved whilst ensuring reliable operation.

The SNYPER-LTE Graphyte helps installation engineers and project managers to select the most reliable network for each location and to carry out all post-deployment analysis.

This facility is particularly useful because it means that the operation of the SNYPER-LTE is not limited by the SIM that is available.

The SNYPER-LTE Graphite is able to undertake a variety of datalogging activities. Survey results are saved automatically and at the end of the surveying period an overview is instantly available. Detailed and time-stamped logs of cellular signal strengths can be downloaded as required via the device’s built-in USB port for full analysis in standard spreadsheet or graphical HTML format.

Depending on the user’s requirements, the multi-survey results (which are available in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish) can then be broken down by base station, mobile network operator, MNO and network level. Selection of the most suitable MNO/MNO’s for a given location can be assisted through viewing information on the presence of each base-station, during the multiple surveying period, as well as via an MNO summary table showing the number of operator base-stations at defined signal level breaks.

The SNYPER-LTE Graphyte simplifies survey logging though easy-to-follow menus that enable users to set their survey criteria, including number of surveys and time intervals between them, with pre-set configurations.

“The SNYPER-LTE Graphyte – is the first of its kind to enable multiple surveys to be logged sequentially, automatically and unattended,” commented Stephen Sydes, managing director at Siretta. “The SNYPER-LTE Graphyte allows the user to set up cellular signal strength logging, as a background task, for up to 500 surveys and up to a week’s worth of data, freeing them up to concentrate on other priorities. This has to have efficiency and productivity benefits for both the individual user and their companies.”

Costing less than some mobile phones, whilst having a considerable level of performance, makes the SNYPER-LTE Graphyte analyser a really effective instrument for a huge number of applications.
